Almost 500 participants are getting ready to take part in the 2012 BC Gymnaestrada in Whistler from June 9-10. With a theme of “So You Think You Can Move” the event is being held at the Whistler Secondary School. Gymnastics BC and Whistler Gymnastics are thrilled to be hosting this celebration of the movement for recreational and performance gymnastics.
The BC Gymnaestrada is a unique form of recreational gymnastics that features group performances in a non-competitive setting. The goals of Gymnaestrada are to promote and encourage the growth of recreational gymnastics, inspire and encourage joy in exercise and to demonstrate the development of the participants.
The event is open to anyone of any age or skill level and this year’s participants represent artistic and rhythmic gymnastics clubs in BC, Alberta and Washing State as well as Special Olympics. 2012 marks the first time that clubs from Washington State are participating.
The participants will take part in a variety of sessions on Saturday designed to increase their enjoyment of movement. These sessions include Movie Stunts, Parkour and The Groove Method. They will also have the opportunity to enjoy Whistler and the many activities throughout the village.
The grand finale for the 2012 BC Gymnaestrada is the performance on Sunday, June 10. Also, being held at Whistler Secondary School, this will be the culmination of months of choreographing, practice and hard work as they perform their routines to family, friends and each other!
Also featured during the weekend, is the annual Whistler Gymnastics adult meet “High on Gymnastics”, taking place on Saturday, June 9 at 7:00pm at the Oros Whistler Gymnastics Centre. This event features modified rules to encourage a fun competition for adults of any age.
