Brittany Rogers in third; Vaculik leads contenders for women’s Olympic gymnastics team

In the first competition on Tuesday in a two-part selection event for the five-member women’s Olympic gymnastics team,  BC’s Brittany Rogers, placed first on vault and uneven bars to move up to third place overall in the fight for an Olympic berth with 26.60 points.

Briannah Tsang (Flicka) was third on vault and sits in 10th place.

Kristina Vaculik of Whitby, Ont., maintained a commanding lead among the group of 11 gymnasts vying for a spot on on the squad. She placed first on beam, third on uneven bars, fourth on floor and seventh on vault to finish first overall, ending the day with a total of 76.60 points in the Olympic selection race.

“I’ve just been taking one thing at a time and this has been another big stepping stone towards London,” said Vaculik, a three-time Canadian all around champion. “I haven’t been focussing on points, but on my routines and setting my sights on the Olympics.”

All 11 gymnasts will compete again on Thursday in the final selection meet with the top five overall qualifying for Canada’s first full women’s Olympic team since 2004. Results from the 2012 Canadian championships last month in Regina also count towards the Olympic selection.

Victoria Moors of Cambridge, Ont., finished a close second on Tuesday, solidifying her hold on second place in the Olympic qualification with 55.40 points.

Jessica Savona of Oakville, Ont., is ranked fourth overall with 23.20 points, Dominique Pegg of Sarnia, Ont., fifth with 23.10 points and Ellie Black of Halifax with 22.40.

Trailing by more than 10 points are Madeline Gardiner of Cambridge, Ont., in 7th place overall, Mikaela Gerber of Cambridge, Ont, 8th, Jessica Dowling of Oakville, Ont., 9th and Anysia Unick of Calgary, 11th.

Flicka’s Brittany Rogers and Briannah Tsang are set for the final selection event to determine Canada’s five-member women’s Olympic artistic gymnastics team. The event is being held in Gatineau, Que. from June 24-28.

Twelve gymnasts, including Rogers and Tsang were invited to the event, but that number has dropped to 11 following the withdrawal on Thursday of former Ottawa resident Talia Chiarelli due to back problems.

Two competitions will be held with the first on Tuesday, June 26th from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm and the second on Thursday, June 28th from 11 am to  1 pm.

Results will be available as soon as possible after the second competition on June 28th.

In addition to Rogers and Tsang. the gymnasts vying for a spot on the Olympic team are:

Elsabeth Black of Halifax, Jessica Dowling of Oakville, Ont., Madeline Gardiner, Victoria Moors, Mikaela Gerber, all of Cambridge, Ont., Dominique Pegg of Sarnia, Ont.,  Jessica Savona of Oakville, Ont.,  Anysia Unick of Calgary and Kristina Vaculik of Whitby, Ont.

Going into the final selection event, the top-5 ranked gymnasts based on a points system following the 2012 Canadian championships are Vaculik, Moors, Pegg, Black and Savona.
