Angel Zhong (Omega) was 13th all around while Taylor Chan (TAG) and Samantha Haghighat-Joo (Omega) competed on three events each.
Second medal for Team BC
In the men’s senior competition, Robert Watson (Richmond) won the silver medal, just 0.150 points behind Canadian champion Hugh Smith (Nova Scotia). Bobby Kriangkum (Alberta) was third.
Kal Nemier (Flicka) was seventh, Zachary Clay (Twisters) was 12th, Devy Dyson (Richmond) was 13th, Joshua Stuart (Richmond) was 17th and Scott Nabata (Kamloops) was 19th.
Also competing were event specialists Scott Morgan (Flicka) and Ken Ikeda (Twisters). Morgan was first on rings, second on vault and fifth on floor exercise while Ikeda tied for fifth on parallel bars, 17th on pommel horse and tied for 19th on vault.
Two senior titles for Nova Scotia
2012 Olympian Ellie Black captured the women’s senior Canadian title with Natalie Vaculick (Ontario) in second and Megan Chang (Ontario) in second.
Team BC’s Briannah Tsang (Flicka) was 10th and led the field on vault. Taylor Ricci (Flicka) was 12th and Nicole Chow (TAG) was 14th.
Bronze for Team BC’s men’s youth team
Team BC won a bronze medal in the men’s youth team competition. Led by Michael Sibley (Flicka), who finished fourth, the team was just behind Ontario and Quebec.
Nicolas Bourne (Richmond) was 10th, Cameron Stanley (Langley) 15th, Kevin Naismith (Langley) 16th, Liam Dawson (Okanagan) was 18th, Cohen Kiers (Twisters) was 24th and Dawson Friesen (Twisters) was 27th.
Other Team BC results
Darren Wong (Phoenix) finished fifth in the men’s argo competition while Chris Kaji (Richmond) was 14th.
In the women’s national open team competition, Team BC finished fourth behind Ontario, Alberta and Manitoba.
In the national open 13-15 age group qualifying, Ashlynn Skulstad (Twisters) as 12th, Atzin San Roman (Phoenix) was 13th, Alannah McPherson (Langley) was 15th and Jordan DeJong (Flicka) was 19th.
Itzia San Roman (Phoenix) was the top Team BC qualifier in the national open 16+ age group, finishing ninth. Brianne Kerr (Lion’s Pride) was 22nd, Maya Rahn (Lion’s Pride) tied for 23rd, Andry Friesen (Twisters) was 26th, Micayalla Broadway (Duncan) was 33rd and Stephanie Bedry (Langley) was 34th.

Wednesday’s results from 2013 Canadian Championships

Team BC’s men and women were on the floor on Wednesday at the 2013 Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Ottawa. Day one of the men’s argo, tyro and junior competitions and qualifying for the HP novice and national novice gymnasts were featured.
In the men’s argo competition, Darren Wong (Phoenix) is the top B.C. athlete heading into tomorrow’s finals. Wong is fifth all around and leads on high bar. Chris Kaji (Richmond) is 11th.
Aaron Mah (Phoenix) is in third place after day one of the men’s junior competition. He was one of just two gymnasts in the competition to place first in more than one event, winning parallel bars and finishing in a tie for top spot on high bar.
In fifth place heading into day two is Steven Chaplin (Twisters). He also leads on vault. Julian Geisler (Langley) is ninth, Alexander Farquharson (Delta) is 13th and Brian Lau (Richmond) is 14th.
Team BC had no competitors in the tyro competition.
Novice Women
In the qualifying competition for the high performance women, Haley de Jong (Flicka) was fifth, while Seina Murase-Cho (Omega) tied for ninth.
Madelyn McPhee (TAG) leads Team BC in the national novice qualifying finishing fifth. In 13th is Lauren Wang (Club Aviva), Jessie Moody (Phoenix) is 17th, Emily Moorthy (Twisters) is 19th, Claire Posno (Phoenix) is 20th and Ashley Obsieger (Flicka) is 25th.
In the team competition, Team BC finished fourth behind Ontario, Quebec and Alberta.
Artistic gymnastics kicks off at the 2013 Canadian Gymnastics Championships

Defending junior champion, Shallon Olsen (Omega) leads the juniors into Thursday’s finals. Olsen was first on vault with a score of 16.100 while finishing in second on beam and floor and third on uneven bars. Aleeza Yu (Ontario) and Brianna Clark (Quebec) were in second and third.
Team BC’s Angel Zhong (Omega) was 13th, Samantha Haghighat-Joo (Omega) was 14th and Taylor Chan (TAG) was 16t, competing on three events.
In the senior competition Kaitlyn Hofland (Ontario) was the top competitor followed by Ellie Black (Nova Scotia) and Megan Chant (Ontario). Team BC’s Briannah Tsang (Flicka) was 11th, Taylor Ricci (Flicka) was 12th, Nicole Chow (TAG) was 16th and Shae Zamardi (Flicka) was 17th.
Among the day’s highlights was a double double layout by 2012 Olympian Victoria Moors (Ontario).
Peter Nicol hired as new Gymnastics Canada chief operating officer

Gymnastics Canada (GCG) is pleased to announce that Mr. Peter Nicol will be joining the GCG senior management team as the chief operating officer (COO).
Peter Nicol is a versatile bilingual manager with extensive experience in sport leadership and administration at the national and international level. Nicol has been involved with the Canadian Force (CF) Sports Program since 1988. Over the course of 24 years, he has obtained experience as an athlete, team manager, coach, event organizer, and program director, including four years as the Senior Sports Manager for the CF Sports Program.
Nicol’s education and training, along with his military and civilian background, has provided him with strong leadership, communication, management and interpersonal relationship skills, as well as valuable experience in a high performance multi-sport environment.
He recently completed his Master’s degree in sports administration at the University of Ottawa and brings a broad range of knowledge and expertise to this new position with Gymnastics Canada.
As a member of the senior management team, the chief operating officer is responsible for the overall administration and day to day operations of the federation in accordance with the strategic priorities and the operational framework. The COO also oversees the business development of the federation.
Nicol is fully bilingual and will officially start his new duties in Ottawa on Monday, April 15, 2013.
