Robert Watson (Richmond) won his first senior men’s Elite Canada title yesterday in Mississauga.   Watson scored 84.100 ahead of Anderson Loran with 83.850 and Hugh Smith who scored 83.150. Other BC athletes were Jason Scott (Richmond, 6th), Devy Dyson (Richmond, 9th) and Scott Morgan (Flicka) who competed on three apparatus.

In the Junior men’s competition, Zachary Clay (Twisters) won gold ahead of Joshua Stuart (Richmond) who took the silver. In third was Nicolas Mallia.

In the men’s Tyro category Sacha Bratty (Marble), Aaron Mah (Vancouver Phoenix) and Nicolas Garfias (Twisters) are in the top 6 after Day 1. In the Argo competition, Cohen Kiers (Twisters) and Nicolas Cruz (Marble) are in the middle of the pack heading into Day 2′s competition.

Flicka’s Brittany Rogers continued her remarkable comeback from a career threatening ankle injury by taking the silver medal in the senior women’s competition. Kristina Vaculik won the competition with a score of 56.350. Rogers was just behind with 55.150 followed by Victoria Moors with 55.050.

Also representing BC in the senior women’s competition were: Briannah Tsang (Flicka, 13th), Laura-Ann Chong (Flicka, 15th), Shae Zamardi (Flicka, 17th), Taylor Ricci (Flicka, T20th), Emma Sibson (Flicka, T20th) and Jennifer Chew (Flicka, 23rd).

In the novice women’s first day of competition Seina Murase-Cho (Omega) is the top BC athlete in 4th. Also qualifying for the Saturday’s All Around competition are Angel Zhong (Omega), Jordan de Jong (Omega), Samantha Haghighat-Joo (Omega) and Haley de Jong (Omega).

Results

Clubs are reminded that Pre-Argo is an age category for CPP 1 and 2 not a category in itself.  They do receive  bronze, silver and gold awards but they do not need to be segregated for competitions.

Pre-Novice Endeavour is the BC precursor to the Canadian Pre-Novice Program.  This was GYMSTART 4 AND 5 in previous years but is now being integrated within the provincial programs. This category should be integrated with other pre-novice categories at your local events.

It has been a very busy couple of weeks for gymnastics in British Columbia. There have been competitions throughout the province including the annual North Shore and Omega Invitationals. BC’s Interclub athletes had the opportunity to show off their skills at the “Under the Big Top” event in Surrey. Some athletes competed well in Florida while still others are getting ready for the BC Winter Games. And clubs are celebrating National Gymnastics Week in a variety of ways…

Brittany Rogers

Sport BC has announced that Brittany Rogers (Flicka) is the Harry Jerome Comeback Award winner for 2011. The award, presented by Canadian Direct Insurance, recognizes a BC amateur athlete who demonstrated great perseverance in the face of adversity — a trait that epitomizes the story of the 18-year old gymnast.

While competing for Team Canada at the Pacific Rim Championships in 2010, Rogers fell on a beam dismount and broke her ankle. This would have been career-ending for most gymnasts; however, Rogers persevered through her injury and returned to the world stage a year after surgery and extensive rehabilitation. At the 2011 Osijek Challenger Cup World Cup in Croatia, she was the only gymnast to qualify in all four event finals securing a silver medal on vault — now she has her eye on the 2012 Summer Olympics.

“It takes a certain level of passion and drive to overcome the obstacles with which Brittany Rogers has faced,” said Carey Summerfelt, Manager of Sponsorship & Events at Sport BC. “She is among Canada’s best female artistic gymnasts and, through her power, conviction and dedication, returned to full form to be a top contender in her sport.”

On March 8, 2012, at Sport BC’s 46^th Annual Athlete of the Year Awards presented by TELUS, Rogers will be honoured for her long road back to sport alongside 16 other athletes, coaches and offices who represent BC’s best. Previous Harry Jerome Comeback award winners include gymnasts Kate Richardson (2002), Karen Kelsall (1980) and Bill Mackie (1972) alongside other athletes such as Emily Brydon (2003, Alpine Skiing), Silken Laumann (1992, Rowing) and Harry Jerome (Athletics) himself in the award’s inaugural year, 1968.
