Wednesday’s results from 2013 Canadian Championships

Team BC’s men and women were on the floor on Wednesday at the 2013 Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Ottawa. Day one of the men’s argo, tyro and junior competitions and qualifying for the HP novice and national novice gymnasts were featured.

In the men’s argo competition, Darren Wong (Phoenix) is the top B.C. athlete heading into tomorrow’s finals. Wong is fifth all around and leads on high bar. Chris Kaji (Richmond) is 11th.

Aaron Mah (Phoenix) is in third place after day one of the men’s junior competition. He was one of just two gymnasts in the competition to place first in more than one event, winning parallel bars and finishing in a tie for top spot on high bar.

In fifth place heading into day two is Steven Chaplin (Twisters). He also leads on vault. Julian Geisler (Langley) is ninth, Alexander Farquharson (Delta) is 13th and Brian Lau (Richmond) is 14th.

Team BC had no competitors in the tyro competition.

Novice Women

In the qualifying competition for the high performance women, Haley de Jong (Flicka) was fifth, while Seina Murase-Cho (Omega) tied for ninth.

Madelyn McPhee (TAG) leads Team BC in the national novice qualifying finishing fifth. In 13th is Lauren Wang (Club Aviva), Jessie Moody (Phoenix) is 17th, Emily Moorthy (Twisters) is 19th, Claire Posno (Phoenix) is 20th and Ashley Obsieger (Flicka) is 25th.

In the team competition, Team BC finished fourth behind Ontario, Quebec and Alberta.

Pacific Rim Championships ticket winners

Noreen Bent and Tara Masson are the first to secure their tickets to the 2014 Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships next April. They were the lucky winners of four-packs to the event after completing the recent member survey.

Over 100 people completed the survey which will help Gymnastics BC with sponsorship and services that meet the needs of our members.

The 2014 Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships take place April 11-13 at the Richmond Oval. Nineteen countries from around the Pacific Ocean including China, Japan, the U.S. and Australia are expected to challenge the Canada for gold!

Artistic gymnastics kicks off at the 2013 Canadian Gymnastics Championships

Artistic gymnastics kicked off yesterday at the 2013 Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Ottawa. Team BC was well represented in the women’s senior and junior qualifying competitions.

Defending junior champion, Shallon Olsen (Omega) leads the juniors into Thursday’s finals. Olsen was first on vault with a score of 16.100 while finishing in second on beam and floor and third on uneven bars. Aleeza Yu (Ontario) and Brianna Clark (Quebec) were in second and third.

Team BC’s Angel Zhong (Omega) was 13th, Samantha Haghighat-Joo (Omega) was 14th and Taylor Chan (TAG) was 16t, competing on three events.

In the senior competition Kaitlyn Hofland (Ontario) was the top competitor followed by Ellie Black (Nova Scotia) and Megan Chant (Ontario). Team BC’s Briannah Tsang (Flicka) was 11th, Taylor Ricci (Flicka) was 12th, Nicole Chow (TAG) was 16th and Shae Zamardi (Flicka) was 17th.

Among the day’s highlights was a double double layout by 2012 Olympian Victoria Moors (Ontario).
