Robert Watson (Richmond) won a silver medal on parallel bars at the Hungarian Grand Prix gymnastics competition on Sunday.

Teammate Joshua Stuart capped a strong meet by qualifying for three event finals, notching his best result on high bar with a 5th-place finish.

Watson earned his trip to the podium with a score of 14.150 points just behind gold medal winner Brez Marko of Croatia with 14.200 points.

“I didn’t expect parallel bars to be my best event but I knew that if I hit my routine I would be able to rank high,” said Watson, a promising newcomer to the rebuilding senior men’s team.

In the other five events, Watson wasn’t as sharp as he needed to be to qualify for more finals, partly due to a recent back injury that is still bothering him in some events.

Watson, who rang up four medals at the 2012 Canadian championships, including gold on floor, has been working since then on adding difficulty and cleaning up on form in all six events.
