BC’s Brittany Rogers (Flicka) was 7th in today’s Olympic vault final in London. Leading off the competition, Rogers landed two strong vaults for a combined score of 14.483. Canada’s other competitor in the final, Ellie Black, fell on her first vault and an ankle injury forced her to not complete her second.
Many had expected McKayla Maroney of the United States to win gold easily. However, she fell on her second vault and had to watch as Romania’s Sandra Izbasa won the gold medal, leaving her with the silver.
Today’s competition concluded the event for the five Canadian women. With their fifth place showing the team final, a strong all around competition by Dominique Pegg and Black and Rogers qualifying for the vault final, the 2012 Olympics are the best-ever for women’s artistic gymnastics.
Congratulations to Brittany and her teammates: Ellie, Dominique, Kristina and Victoria!
