New-look website brings FIG another step closer to fans

[From FIG] The launch of the International Gymnastics Federation’s (FIG) revamped website by President Bruno Grandi (ITA) on Thursday forms part of an exciting new initiative designed to bring the sport of Gymnastics into the spotlight and to create a fresh buzz among its fans.
Motivated by a desire to promote Gymnastics with proactive communication through social media – a goal proclaimed by the FIG Executive Committee in its spring meeting last year – the FIG is strengthening the use of its various social media platforms to reach out to the world. With the slogan “We are Gymnastics!” at its core, the new approach fully embraces the promotion of Gymnastics and appeals to fans of the sport.
President Grandi said: “The use of social media provides excellent opportunities for us to increase our sport’s visibility and to connect to its fan base. We are aiming to captivate the public, encourage conversations about the sport and to constantly grow the community. United by a love for Gymnastics, we can now share our passion on common platforms.”
The rebranding project includes a new look for the federation’s social media sites, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, as well as the launch of the Google+ page. The FIG’s newsletters have also had a redesign.
The FIG made its first steps on social media in 2010, when the Gymnastics YouTube channel and the federation’s Facebook page were launched. The video channel, in particular, has attracted numerous fans and currently counts over 5.5 million video views. The FIG Facebook community has 7.700 likes, is constantly growing and enjoys access to fresh and up-to-date content.
In 2011, the FIG added Twitter as a tool for real-time information to its communications mix, which is much appreciated by more than 4,000 followers, especially during events. With the recent launch of Google+, the FIG aims to close the circle of social media platforms, reaching out to the highest possible number of Gymnastics lovers.
Social media is now systematically included in the FIG’s communication activities, complementing traditional media and cross-promoting content via the various platforms. The federation will continue to develop its strategies along the road to London 2012 and fans can do their bit by providing constructive feedback on their preferred site.
